Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of research into how students learn and the implications for teaching.

Students can learn in many diverse ways such as visual, aural, verbal and physical. As an educator I provide students with a diverse range learning materials and classroom demonstrations. These include demonstrations, guides, videos.etc

Engaging students is crucial in delivering strong learning outcomes. One way I engage students is through the use of Inquirey based Learning (PBL). A PBL task I have created to engage my Year 10 students in learning databases is a Murder Mystery. This task provided students with an open ended assignment that allows them to solve the mystery using a variety of skills and techniques.
Examples of these can be found here:

Demonstrate knowledge of teaching strategies that are responsive to the learning strengths and needs of students from diverse linguistic, cultural, religious and socioeconomic backgrounds.

The site I work in has students from many linguistically and culturally diverse students. I have employed a variety of strategies based on each individual student’s capability. One such strategy I have employed is providing task sheets and video tutorials of varying languages catered to the individual student.

An Example of the video tutorials can be found here:

Demonstrate broad knowledge and understanding of the impact of culture, cultural identity and linguistic background on the education of students from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds.

As an educator I spend time each term looking at the needs of all my students. Through the use of One Plans I am able to identify and specify individual learning changes and needs of my students including those with an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background.

At my current site I have spent a great deal of time working on the implementation of One Plans. I have develoepd a program and database that is used by the entire site (70+ students) that allows my co-workers to efficiently and effectively create individual, thorough teaching plans for their diverse range of students.

Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of strategies for differentiating teaching to meet the specific learning needs of students across the full range of abilities.

I differentiate my lessons based around student capability (assessed by pretesting and formative assessment). One such method of differentiation I use are tiered lessons, these lessons look at a student’s readiness and allows student to gage how ready they are for the content; A students progress can be gauged and if their readiness level changes more appropriate work can be allocated.

An example of a tiered task can be found here: Pythag Calc
