There are three main types of Assessment, Dyagnostic, Formative and Summative.
Dyagnostic:
Testing done to assertain a students capability at certain point in their learning such as at the start of a new course. This testing allows a teacher to have an understanding of where a student's capability is compared to national standards, inturn allowing for work to be scaffolded and differentiated accordingly.
Formative:
Formative assessment (Dyagnostic testing is a form of fromative assessment), is an assessment method to gage student capability. It allows a teacher to see a students progress from an initial dyagnostic test to where the student is currently placed in regards to the standards. Fromative assessment can take the form of tests, tasks, folios.etc all of which is used to judge student capability and understanding.
Summative:
Summative assessment is used as a final evaluation of student learning , capability and understanding against a benchmark standard at the end of a unit / topic of work. Such work can include assignments, projects or exams.
